Practices will be using a new set of E/M documentation and coding guidelines for ED visits in January of 2023, and BSA Healthcare is working to ensure that our clients will be ready!

AMA’s new guidelines seek to provide continuity across all the E/M sections allowing for revisions implemented in the E/M office visit section in 2021 to extend to all other E/M sections – including emergency medicine and hospitalist E/M codes – with revisions to the Levels of Medical Decision (MDM) table and retirement of some HM codes. In the recently published Medicare Physician Fee Schedule Proposed Rule, CMS endorsed further revisions to the unified E/M guidelines. A proactive approach will ensure compliance and keep the revenue flowing as you implement changes to the Evaluation and Management section of CPT® in your organization.

BSA Healthcare staff is currently working on the following:

  • Newly revised Emergency Medicine and Hospitalist Coding Reference Tools
  • A free webinar hosted by John Stimler, DO, CPC, CHC, FACEP, who will describe the documentation guideline changes and new requirements.
  • Updates to current webinars in the Emergency Medicine Coding and Reimbursement Webinar Library, the Emergency Medicine Provider Documentation Webinar Library, and Hospitalist Medicine Provider Documentation and Coding Webinar Library subscription services.
  • Virtual coder and provider training sessions covering the documentation guideline changes and new requirements.
  • Updates to our proprietary coding audit software.
  • Recommendations for external auditing services following implementation.

BSA Healthcare will be publishing deliverables dates in September and October. In the interim, please feel free to contact Jennifer Cipriani at 888-568-4993 with question
